One of the blessings of the Internet is the fact that it enables us to explore realms of study, to participate in conversations, and to become members of communities that we might not otherwise have done. Now, in my own theological education, the Internet has been absolutely invaluable. It has enabled me to explore issues that I could not find material upon in libraries.
It has enabled me to get into more depth through conversation, to stretch and to stress-test my thoughts. It's enabled me to find companions on the way to think about issues along with other people. And in all of these respects, I've wanted to provide for others some of the things that I would have wanted 10, 15 years ago.
It has been a particular excitement for me to be involved with
the Davenant Institute and the Theopolis Institute and various other organisations like that, that share that vision, that are trying to bring to a wider audience of lay people, to pastors, and to others who want to go deeper in their theological education, who want to find communities of fellow travellers, who want to explore these issues and take time out to look into matters in more depth. It's been exciting to be involved with groups that are providing resources for those people. And one of the things the Davenant Institute has just set up is Davenant Hall.
The purpose of Davenant Hall is to provide accessible courses that are not too costly in expense or in time, and to provide experts to go through particular issues, specialist topics in some depth, topics that will be of interest to a wider audience, but which will stretch and develop people's theological education and just their interest in the areas more generally. So for our first semester we have courses on John Davenant, on the death of Christ. We have an introduction to Thomas Aquinas taught by David Haynes, which will be a fantastic course I'm sure.
And I'm going to be giving a course on biblical wisdom. In this course I'm going to be
leading the members of the group through a study of the theme of wisdom from the very beginning of Genesis to the New Testament as we see it developed in Christ. Thinking about how these things can be applied in our lives, how we read the wisdom literature, how we understand the way that it works to develop wisdom in its readers, and then thinking about specific topics relating to wisdom.
Now if you would like to be involved in this course, it costs $99 for 10
weeks. That's 10 hours of lectures and engagement. Most of those hours will be given to lectures, but there will be time for interaction and questions.
It will be a weekly Zoom conference
and we'll be planning the times around what works best for the group. If you're not able to make a lecture, they will be recorded for the members of the group, not for a wider audience. And I hope that we'll be able to get into some depth in this subject.
I want to encourage you to be involved.
It is an absolutely fascinating part of scripture that is often ignored. I had a recent conversation with John Higgins that you can maybe watch that to get a sense of some of the areas of the subject of wisdom that we don't explore enough.
Now I would like to explore this with you. If you'd
like to be involved, you have 10 days to apply. It's $99, as I said, and it only will take 10 hours of your time in classes and there will be a little time in reading.
I'm going to have a fairly
minimal reading load. But if you'd like to be involved, the link is going to be in the show notes. Thank you very much for listening and hopefully see some of you in the next few weeks.
The course starts on the 30th of September. God bless and thank you for listening.
