Titus (Part 2)

Titus
TitusSteve Gregg

The second part of Steve Gregg's commentary on Titus focuses on the qualities expected of church leaders and the importance of sound doctrine. Older men and women are encouraged to be examples to younger generations, and women are cautioned against being idle gossips. Gregg also touches on the issue of slavery in the early church, and the need for proper behavior among all members.

...became respectable government-wise, the government under Constantine began to actually pay government salaries to the clergy and so forth. It's been considered normal. He hasn't passed or refused to be a priest.
It may not prove that he's a priest, but it'd be hard to prove that he isn't, because you don't know his heart.
But it's ideally elders should... in his dealings, he doesn't show harsh reality. He's a little more harsh in his judgments against elders.
He is atrocious. He is... and an elder was supposed to be apt to teach. And even the elders would probably... but they do have to hold... the elders must be people who have a firm... and who are not going to... so that he may be able to... by stopping teaching, it's not mentioned, he's got to... and that might mean debate them.
There are many insubordinates and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision. Now, the key words here are insubordinates and deceivers, because he's got a quote. Now, he says that there are many in creed of this character, and especially those of the teaching thing, but it's even true today.
Even in this day of women's... a woman may have done... then for a man who's... it does appear to be safe in your household. Acts 16... and often the case, you get the man of the house... women may try to do the same... these teachers who are the men of the house... and it may mean that there are some groups meeting in houses. The whole groups are being subverted by the presence of teachers who come in, you know, doing what? Radio evangelism? And who don't... in terms of these evil beasts, these evil-doers, Paul goes on to name Epimenides.
Now, this man is known quite a bit, and Plato, in fact... Epimenides actually said that he is a bigoted Jew, bigoted... and he says, hey, this is... has made this assessment... and he doesn't only say one of... it simply means that he was regarded... said that he was divided... evil beasts, lazy gluttons... and Paul says this... I believe Paul... he's quoting a creed... and the creed says all... and Paul says this... you could say, well, how do I know I can trust you? And yet, he's saying... you know, he doesn't say many, he doesn't say most, he just makes a... he makes a... I mean, if I said, would someone give you the benefit of the doubt? I mean, that would be considered a... because, in simply saying Jews are greedy, that would be insinuating that all Jews... it's kind of ironic... and that's... that they may be sound in the faith... and by this he certainly means... and therefore those... not giving heed to Jewish fables... again, suggesting... may have been... and commandments of men... but even their mind... now, that statement can certainly be misused... if somebody wishes to be a sinner... even these actions that... did he mean to say that literally everything is... what he means in both contexts seems to be... in the Jewish religion... and that's the kind of... Jewish fables... and commandments of men... so he seems to be talking about the influence... to the Jews... certain things were regarded... you're well familiar with that... but... cleanness... that was a big issue... and to the Judaizers... seems to be saying that... with reference to these Jewish ideas... of cleanness and uncleanness... food... as Jesus... especially he can eat anything... he can be circumcised or uncircumcised... he can, in other words... ignore Jewish customs of cleanness or uncleanness... if he has been converted... if he is... maybe the new man is regenerated... then... all these things... to the unbelieving... they can circumcise... everything they do is impure... even if they're eating kosher... even if they're circumcised... I'll let you read it... because it's kind of a complex sentence... at the end of chapter 2 of Romans... in verse 27... he says... and will not the physically uncircumcised... and in character... his circumcision... even if some of the things... now, he says that these same people... in verse 6... but in works... they deny him... being abominable... disobedient... and disqualified... they are... they prove themselves to be... and... it makes it very clear... he says... if their works deny God... then they're abominable... disobedient... and disqualified... are the good works... and... he considers that criteria... earlier... he has said... depart from iniquity... in other words... don't just... because those who don't... may still make... that you can read their profession... he said... if anyone... they may confess... they deny him... now, here's what he calls... men... old women... young women... and young men... he's done something similar to that... he divided the... in verse 75... he wants... but different persons of different age... have different needs... they are to be sober... sound in faith and love... silly... I mean... they're serious minded... reverence means that they behave in a way that... sound in faith and in love... faith and love are... just here... faith... and a good conscience... and... so here... faith and love... they are to be people who have... and show this... in their faith... verse 3... the older women... in any labor... is better than just... any labor will bring... some prosperity... some... the danger... of those who are... the young widows... probably the reason he is being bidvied more than men... a man... you know... didn't have life insurance... he didn't have social security... he didn't have retirement... he had to work... he became an invalid... in which case he's not going to be one of his mousetraps... anyway... men had to work... teachers of good faith... the older women are to be teachers... shapes... which means... they have their kids in their hair... early in the day... if they can do it at all... and they're no doubt... are... and... the... the... is actually... in Paul's... so... Paul says the older women should be allowed... making a home... and... if Paul didn't trust... that he shouldn't have turned them loose... he didn't turn them loose... but they did have a spear... and... able to teach... it is difficult... in our culture... to want to teach... usually this is not what... there are older fishermen... and who write books for women... a lot of the older women who... here's the syllabus... for... the... to love their husbands... love their children... now... why would a woman... well... us... denying their children... that they can't say no to them... they can't... they... they never discipline them... there are many modern parents... and I suspect... because they would have been raised... and out of the house... I mean... because... we don't... that he that loves him... disciplines him... and that's something... there needs to be... David was not... because that's what... it's usually... he did lead in spiritual ways... but she was going to do it at her home... they said they should... do it... may not be blaspheme... things... I mean... you mean doctrine... theology... the average person didn't know what they did... the average man... anyway... women are to behave this way... and the behavior of women... in reverence... it's got to be a man who cannot... that one who is an opponent may be ashamed having nothing to say... evil... and nothing evil to say of him... sound speech but cannot be... it seems to me like the basic... is sound... really... it could be... irrefutable... that anyone who is European... sober... is the older man... sober... taken by the... to be obedient to their own... stealing from their... that they may adorn the... or render attractive... by the behavior of... there were a lot of slaves... in Ephesians... in Colossus... and in Titus... he only addresses the slaves... very possibly... he doesn't say anything to the... to be obedient... sound speech sound speech
